Creating and Uploading in Content Drive

In Content Drive, you create content, folders and files from the toolbar above the content list. Whatever you create goes into the folder you're viewing, so open the right folder first.

This page covers creating content and folders, uploading files, and setting a folder's default upload behavior.

Creating Content and Folders#

Click New and choose what to create:

  • All Content Types, or a base type such as Content, Widget, File or Page, opens Select a Content Type. Search for or browse to the content type, select it and click Create.
  • Folder creates a folder inside the current folder.

The New menu

New content is created in the current folder and in the language the list is filtered by. The editor opens in a panel on the right side of Content Drive, so you never leave the list. See Editing Content.

Uploading Files#

  1. Open the folder you want to upload to.
  2. Click Upload.
  3. Choose how to store the files:
    • Asset (recommended): for images, documents and media used in your content. dotCMS picks the right content type for each file, for example Image for a picture.
    • File: for code, templates and developer files that need predictable URLs.
  4. Select one or more files.

You can also drag files from your computer onto the list; you're asked to choose Asset or File the same way. Uploads continue in the background while you work, and a message shows their progress.

For more on the difference between assets and files, see File Assets vs. dotAssets.

Setting a Folder's Upload Behavior#

If a folder always holds one kind of file, you can skip the Asset or File choice there by setting a default:

  1. Right-click the folder and choose Folder Settings.
  2. Open the Upload Behavior tab.
  3. Choose Ask each time, Always use Assets or Always use Files.
  4. Optionally, limit Allowed File Extensions and set the Default File Asset Type.
  5. Click Save.

The upload button then reads Upload Asset or Upload File in that folder, and uploads go straight to the chosen type. Changing the setting affects future uploads only; files already in the folder keep their type.

The setting applies only to the folder you set it on. Its subfolders, including ones created later, keep their own setting, which is Ask each time unless you change it.
