Content Drive

Moving to Content Drive

Content Drive is the intended successor to Content Search and Site Browser. For now, all three tools are available side by side, so you can start using Content Drive while keeping the tools you know.

This page explains how the three tools coexist, where familiar tasks live in Content Drive, and what still needs Content Search or Site Browser.

Which Tools Appear in Your Menu#

  • New installations show Content Drive first under the Content menu, and don't include Content Search or Site Browser in the default menus. Administrators can add them back to any role.
  • Upgraded installations keep their existing menus. Content Drive is available alongside the tools you already use.

Administrators control which of the three tools each role sees, like any other tool in the admin menu. See Roles and Tools.

If a user's menu includes Content Drive but not Content Search or Site Browser, links elsewhere in dotCMS that point to those tools open the matching place in Content Drive instead. For example:

  • View in the Content Types list opens Content Drive filtered by that content type.
  • A link to a piece of content opens it for editing in Content Drive.

Users who still have Content Search or Site Browser in their menu see those tools as before.

Where Familiar Tasks Live#

In the admin menu, Content Search appears as Search All under Content, and Site Browser as Browser under Sites.

What's Not Available Yet#

Content Drive is still growing. For now, use Content Search or Site Browser to:

  • Import or export content.
  • Move folders. (To move content, use the Move workflow action.)
  • Select items across more than one page of results.
  • Create Menu Links, or publish everything in a folder at once.

Content Drive also doesn't yet remember your last folder and filters between visits; use a bookmarked link to return to a view.
